What Gives? What Has Happened to Us? What gives? What has happened to us? I sit here, deployed in this shit hole that I have spent more time in over the past 11 years than I have at home and I receive ever-growing news that systems that I have been counting on, things I have worked my ass off for, are vanishing. It doesn’t matter what “pot” of money it comes from, if it is for the troops it is disappearing. Some of my dear friends, more mentors and living legacy of my Ranger brotherhood have been receiving letters in the mail stating that Prime medical coverage is no longer in existence for their area and that they are being forced to go to standard for medical coverage. I am still Active Duty and on standard myself, but this is by choice after losing a child during my last deployment due to medical incompetence. I’d rather have the power to “fire” doctors that I feel are not cutting it and take my business elsewhere than have my family subject to a doctor’s experiment to build experience so they can have a private practice in the civilian sector. Military medical is SHIT, don’t ever let anyone tell you otherwise. I was blown off a wall in Mosul and suffered fractures to my spine. I waited to seek medical treatment (I thought I had strained my back) until I was home a few weeks later. I received x-rays and carried on. I was a platoon sergeant in the Ranger Regiment then … busy as all get out. We immediately started training for our next deployment less than 6 months away. My back continued to bother me; I figured that if something had popped in the x-rays my PA’s would have contacted me. No. A year later I went back in and had them re- address. The PA I saw looked in my file, asked me if I had ever gone on profile and couldn’t believe I had been carrying on the way I had … because I had indeed fractured my back and not a word was said. C’est la vie, lesson learned on my part, anytime any of my men were injured from that point on they were not allowed to Ranger on … I personally escorted them to the CASH (think MASH), to be treated.  Yesterday tuition assistance was cut for the Army. I am close enough that I would be graduating this year with my BS in Sport and Fitness Management and was looking forward to the next chapter in pursuing my MS in Human Performance. This supposedly is tied to sequestration. Yeah … OK. Just like the 1.7% raise that we supposedly received that was redacted in our 2% increase in taxes this year resulting in a 0.3% pay cut. Why? I can’t make sense of this, I am the enemy of my own government and a war is being waged against me and my fellow service members. We are not to be trusted; all us combat vets are mentally ill and shouldn’t possess guns. Welfare recipients are treated with more dignity and respect by our government than us. I am trying to keep this clean, contained, but what the F**K is going on? Where are the leaders with intestinal fortitude that don’t give two shits about how many terms they serve but care about compromise, resolution, and the greater good? Where? America needs solution driven leaders…and you know where they are? Right f**king here … getting flogged in bondage. Having our lives stripped from us with our dignity. I hate to say this as the implications are deep, but I have killed for less … when it comes to my oath “to uphold the constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic”, I take it very seriously, as many do.  I honestly ask for little. In my 20 years of military service I never received a bonus. I have bled for this country, shattered bones, suffered extremes, and I would do it all again because I believe in our country. I know that this IS a great nation, but it is massively MISLED. Tuition Assistance is not that big a deal really, $4500 a year which covers most of 18 credit hours, my men and I still pay $90 a credit hour for technology fees and for books. It is the mere principle that we have not asked for more, not ever. We have been the silent professionals; following what upper echelon leadership says we need to do to be competitive for promotion. We need a degree according to them … yet they just stripped one of our resources to obtain it, now we must use my GI Bill. Oh wait, when I joined I didn’t even sign up for that. I now have the post 9/11 GI Bill for fighting this damned war that I was actually hoping to split for my children. Sorry kids, you’ll have to work for your education too. Speaking of which, I could get an education much cheaper and easier if I weren’t working… how ironic is that? The true slap in the face is to my men though. I am at the top rung, I am what they aspire to be … and for those that are not deployed right now they had a 4 day weekend yesterday which means that when the “big” news was pushed out at 0630 no one was in to get them to the Education Office to enroll before it was cut at 1700. Pretty convenient to make an announcement like that on a day that everyone has off isn’t it? Yep, General Odierno is in the President’s pocket and plays just like he does. As I said before … MISLED … at every level. In the event you are thinking “do you suppose you can do it better?” You are absof**kinglutely right I can. The first step is Unity  See, we all have our beliefs, we all have our opinions, but respect has all but disappeared. Not too long ago the Supreme Court ruled that “Separate but Equal” was Unconstitutional. This was in reference to gay marriage, but the way I see it is that it is applicable across the board. And if it is Unconstitutional then what business does the Federal government have classifying people by race, creed, religion, gender, and sexual orientation? The ONLY professional area that has a valid means to do this is the medical field in that there are diseases that are more prominent in some ethnicities more than others.  This is just one means of how those in power keep us divided as a nation divided is easier to control that a Unified nation. Why do you think we beat ass in WWII? We were UNIFIED! We need leaders that are not going to point fingers but bring solutions to the table. We need leaders that have no agenda other than improving our nation. By playing the games the media pitches at us about the rhetoric of the day we are only making it easier for our rights to be stripped away. The big issue is to find the real deal, no shit, solution driven leaders to take this country BACK! Lastly, and likely most importantly, I want to thank all of you. I want to thank you for your support, and do not think that you, the American people, are failing us. I am humbled and honored to serve and to still be doing so 20 years later. I would do it all again if given the choice with NO afterthought. I often feel unworthy of the graciousness of our countrymen, for all I have ever done is what was expected of me. My men and I thank you immensely … soon we will ride …
